2009'To Nurture our Students to be Cultured, Enterprising Individuals with a Passion for Learning; Empowered to Lead and Committed to Serve the Nation and the World'. The School Mission clearly encapsulates the emphasis on character development of BPians. In fact, character development of our students is central to the school's educational policy, as espoused also in the School Vision, Values, Motto and Strategic Thrusts.
A whole-school approach is adopted at BPGHS where character development is driven by a tripartite model of school leaders, teachers and student leaders working together with a mutual goal, which is for every BPian to be a leader and exhibit the school values - Teamwork, Responsibility, Integrity, Learning and Service. These core values are communicated to both students and stakeholders such as parents, SAC and alumni, so as to make the character development of BPians an integral part of a student's life at BPGHS. Teachers not only impart values and mould students' character in class through the formal curriculum; they also play a major role outside the classroom through formal and informal leadership training. This leadership training is anchored on the School Values and SEL so that student leadership development and character development mutually reinforce each other.
Character development is deeply rooted in a caring and nurturing school environment. Students' needs are of prime importance and various platforms are used to gather information on their needs and meet these needs. For example, the 'Year Master Programme' ensures that besides Form Teachers and co-Form Teachers, the school management team is also involved in monitoring the well-being and academic performance of students at each level. Platforms are also provided for students to contribute to the ethos of care and nurture. An example is the 'Care and Share Programme' where class leaders organise various activities to raise funds for needy BPians.
BPGHS adopts a 3-pronged approach in meeting the needs of students in the area of character development: explicit values education; opportunities for students to promote and demonstrate the School Values; and self-discipline as a way of life among students. The EXCEL framework encapsulates the various modules implemented to impart values and skills that emphasise character to all BPians. BPians are also given ownership of activities such as CCA, CIP and school-wide events where they put these values and skills into action. The approach towards self-discipline and responsible behaviour empowers BPians to take initiative for developing a strong character and sense of pride as a role model in the community.
