2009Character Development is central to Bedok View’s vision of developing students as “Beacons for a Better Tomorrow”. Students are nurtured to become responsible leaders contributing to family, community and country. Specific ‘Beacon Characteristics’ provide guidance to the desired outcomes of our Character Development programme.
The approach to Character Development is “Care-Engage-Motivate-Leadership”. Good relationship with students is foundational. Multiple platforms enable students to surface suggestions and concerns, and involved in key school activities and decision making. The school culture and environment are supportive and nurturing, with sufficient quality contact time between students and teachers. Competitions, school events, class-based social networking tools and class blogs helped bond the class together and enhance peer support, thus strengthening the environment of care. School programmes are engaging, and hence they are effective vehicles for value inculcation. Special care is always taken to ensure that programmes are purposefully designed and effectively implemented. Students who manifest good values are celebrated and recognized through a structured reward and recognition programme, so as to motivate others to do the same. Students with leadership qualities are given appropriate training, development and opportunities to maximize their potential. Structures and processes are regularly reviewed to ensure they serve the objective of nurturing student leadership in the school. All teachers in the school are also entrusted with the responsibility to develop student leadership.
Character Development in Bedok View is strengthened by the close partnership with stakeholders especially parents. There is regular interaction between the school and the parent community. An active Parent Support Group has been instrumental in forging mutual support among parents and in enhancing school-parent partnership. A network of external agencies and VWOs has also been useful in providing the school with the support needed for an effective Character Development programme.
